On August 5th the group visited their old stomping ground of Bellevue, and it was just like home!
The head of Child Life at Bellevue is the beautiful and remarkable Natalie Shrape, who, we learned, had a personal interest in our new play. She belong to a hive share in Long Island City! Who knew?
Last year we were in residence at Bellevue. Every single month we visited the kids and, based on Natalie’s instructions, the group would either perform a full show for the kids, or go bedside if the children weren’t up to it.
This is a very special skill the actors have, and requires them to be incredibly flexible. They boil the show down to a 10 or 15 minute performance. It’s tough, but it never throws them. In this case, it didn’t stop them from singing and dancing, even in the little space they have, practically streaming out of the doorway!
This time around, we went into the lounge area, where some teens were sitting with their friends and family (maybe 10 folks in total), and then to another child’s room, and then off to the intensive care unit, where the group met with a lovely young man who confessed to being in a lot of pain. Still, the group managed to cheer him up, and he was in good enough spirits to wear one of the bee visors ArtWorks had given us (thanks ArtWorks!!!).
We’ve added an additional show at another favorite haunt, New York Presbyterian, where we’re sure to see new and old friends alike. Until August 25th, enjoy the summer!!!
